What Is a Fire Indicator Panel?
A fire indicator panel receives signals from:
- Smoke detectors (ionisation and photoelectric types)
- Heat detectors and rate-of-rise detectors
- Manual call points (break glass units)
- Duct probe detectors in HVAC systems
- Sprinkler flow and tamper switches
On receipt of an alarm signal, the FIP activates visual and audible alarms, records the event, and may automatically notify the fire brigade via a third-party monitoring service. Building wardens and fire brigade personnel use the FIP display to identify the zone or device in alarm, enabling fast and effective emergency response.
Fire Indicator Panel (FIP)
Our expertise covers the supply, installation, and commissioning of Fire Detection & Alarm Systems. We supply & install or replace Fire Panel with a new one to make the occupant/visitor safe during any fire emergencies. It ccontinuously receives signals from smoke detectors, heat detectors, manual call points (MCPs), and other fire detection devices throughout the building, and displays the status of each monitored zone in real time.
Fire Indicator Panel is required for a broad range of building classes and configuration. Requirements are triggered by factors including building class, storey height, floor area, occupancy type and many more.
Conventional vs Addressable Fire Indicator Panel
There are two main types of fire alarm panels used in Australian buildings. Conventional fire indicator panels organise detectors into zones – when a detector activates, the FIP identifies the zone in alarm, allowing personnel to narrow down the location. Conventional panels are well suited to smaller buildings and straightforward layouts. Addressable fire indicator panels can identify the precise individual device in alarm, providing much greater diagnostic detail, faster response, and greater system flexibility. Addressable systems are typically required for larger, more complex buildings. Our team can advise on the right system type for your building based on size, risk profile, and BCA classification.
FIP Maintenance – AS 1851 Requirements
A fire indicator panel is an essential fire safety measure listed on the fire safety schedule for most commercial and strata buildings in NSW. Under AS 1851 (the routine service standard for fire protection systems), the FIP must be inspected and tested at prescribed intervals – including annual inspection, testing of all connected detectors, fault indicator testing, and battery backup testing. These tests must be documented and are required to support your Annual Fire Safety Statement (AFSS). SPS provides FIP maintenance and testing contracts across Sydney and NSW, ensuring your system remains fully operational and compliant year-round.
EWIS Systems – Emergency Warning & Intercommunication
Many medium and large commercial buildings are also required to have an Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System (EWIS) installed in conjunction with the FIP. An EWIS provides the ability to broadcast verbal evacuation instructions to specific zones or the entire building, and enables fire wardens to communicate via dedicated warden intercommunication point (WIP) phones. SPS installs, tests, and maintains EWIS systems across Sydney and NSW to AS 1670.4 and AS 1851.
Fire Indicator Panel Installation & Service in Sydney & NSW
SPS supplies and installs both conventional and addressable fire indicator panels for new builds, upgrades, and system replacements across the Sydney metro region and greater NSW. We also carry out FIP testing and servicing as part of our ongoing fire maintenance programmes, and can provide fire detection system installation quotes for any building type. Contact us today to discuss your fire alarm panel requirements in Sydney or NSW.
TYPES OF FIP SYSTEM
Choosing the right Fire Indicator Panel (FIP) is essential for maintaining building safety, ensuring fast emergency response, and meeting Australian fire compliance requirements. At SPS Fire & Safety, we supply, install, and maintain both Conventional and Addressable Fire Indicator Panels to suit buildings of all sizes.

CONVENTIONAL FIRE INDICATOR PANEL
A conventional Fire Indicator Panel divides a building into multiple zones. When a fire alarm activates, the panel identifies the affected zone but doesn’t pinpoint the exact device location. This type of panel is best suited for small offices, warehouses, retails shops and small commercial buildings.

ADDRESSABLE FIRE INDICATOR PANEL
An Addressable Fire Indicator Panel is an advanced fire detection system where every device has a unique address. This allows the panel to display the exact location of the activated detector. This type of panel is best suited for multi-storey buildings, hospitals, schools, shopping centres, apartment complexes and industrial facilities.
COMPLEX SYSTEM INTEGRATION (INTERFACES)
A fire alarm system rarely sits in isolation. To meet National Construction Code (NCC) and AS 1670 requirements, your dry fire system must interface with other required building services as required by the relevant Australian Standard. We specialise in managing these critical interfaces, including:
- Mechanical Ventilation Interface: Controlling air handling systems during fire events
- Fire & Sliding Doors: Triggering automatic door closures to contain smoke and flames
- Sprinkler & Pump Monitoring: Monitoring wet fire system activation
- Security & PA Systems: Unlocking security doors and overriding background music for emergency announcements
